Everyone want to go "Green" these days, but sometimes making the more environmentally conscious decision can put a serious strain on your immediate budget.
You don't need to run out and buy a hybrid car or only shop at Whole Foods. There are things you can do everyday that can add up to big savings and still make you feel good inside!
1. Do not buy bottled water. Not only is there a lot of speculation now about the health risks of plastic water bottles, but the amount of waste they create is unbelievable. Unless you live in an area that has advised against drinking tap water, it's not going to hurt you, and you probably won't be able to tell the difference. If you need to have filtered water, buy a Brita, or another water filtering device. You may pay more up front, but you'll recoup that on the amount you'll be saving by not constantly buying bottles.
2. The next time you order takeout, request to not have paper waste. Many companies give you big wads of napkins, a handful of plastic forks and knives, and countless sauce packets. Chances are you have most of those things in your house already. By reducing the amount you accumulate, you're reducing the amount you throw away. And by cutting the amount of times you eat out by once or twice a month, you could be saving almost $100!! That's a quick way to save some serious cash!
3. If you pack a lunch everyday for either yourself or your children, you could be using up to 10 plastic bags. Invest in some glad ware, Tupperware or other storage containers. They can be washed an reused over and over again. They keep food fresh for much longer, and they DON'T create waste!
4. Cut down on water waste! Take shorter showers to reduce water use, and don't leave the water running for extended periods of time when not in use. This will lower your water consumption and lower your heating bills too!
These are just a few ideas... there are many resources out there to help you become a more environmentally friendly person!
